Course Overview:
It is so important for students entering the workforce to be well prepared for the challenges found there. For those students hoping for a career in health care, it is imperative that they understand electronic health records and how those records impact patient care and reimbursement. This course will provide the instructional tools needed to facilitate student learning of the electronic health record process. Administrative, clinical, and billing applications are discussed, as well as real-world situations that the students will encounter in the workforce.
Administrative Medical Assisting is one of the fastest growing careers in the health care industry today. The need for professionals that understand how to utilize computerized medical office software and perform administrative office procedures is growing substantially. Physician practices, hospitals, chiropractic practices, and other health care providers all depend on administrative professionals for day-to-day-support. In the Administrative Medical Assistant course you will learn medical terminology, patient confidentiality, scheduling, customer service, basic patient documentation, and basic billing as well as other administrative duties required by front office personnel.
This course will provide you with key information about medical terminology systems. You will learn the key elements used to build medical terms. This will help you be able to decipher words on your own. You will also review body structure and the main systems of the human body. In doing so, you will learn how to recognize, pronounce. build and spell words related to body structure. You will test your new knowledge throughout the course with activities and quizzes.
Participants will be asked to complete exercises at the end of each chapter as well as reference appendices in the back of the textbook to aid in the learning process. Furthermore, practice labs will be included in activities that will obtain credit for lessons with the course.
This course prepares the student to take the for National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) and National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Medical Administrative Assistant national exams.

Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist Curriculum:
Lesson 1: Introduction to Electronic Health Records
This lesson will explore the history and current use of patient health records, their importance to individuals' health, and their contribution to the healthcare system including documents in medical records, the electronic health record, advantages and disadvantages to using electronic health records.
Lesson 2: Overview of SimChart for the Medical Office
This lesson will review when medical practices go digital and getting comfortable with electronic health records software.
Lesson 3: Privacy, Confidentiality, and Security
This lesson will review in detail the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); the major features of HIPPA including security safeguards and patients' rights under HIPPA; along with how patients can protect their health information.
Lesson 4: Administrative Use of the Electronic Health Record Patient Letter
This lesson will cover the role of the front office assistant, communication in the Medical Office, Incident reports, and managing electronic health records.
Lesson 5: Clinical Use of the Electronic Health Record
This lesson will review the documentation practices in electronic health records while incorporating clinical documentation in the patient record.
Lesson 6: Using the Electronic Health Record for Reimbursement
This lesson will review the healthcare reimbursement process, revenue cycles, coding systems, and potential fraud and abuse cases.
Lesson 7: The Personal Health Record and Patient Portals
This lesson will cover personal health records, what information is included as compared to the medical record, innovative features of personal health records and how to maintain the personal health record using patient portals.
Medical Administrative Assistant Career Prep Curriculum:
Lesson 1: Introduction to Medical Assisting
Lesson One, Introduction to Medical Assisting will introduce medical assisting, the history of medicine, corresponding job descriptions, healthcare facilities, processional behaviors in the workplace, and therapeutic communication. Patient education will be covered in depth due to the critical interactions between healthcare professional and the patient. Medical law and ethics will round out the introduction lesson covering both classifications of the law, medical liability, and making reputable, ethical medical decisions.
Lesson 2: Ambulatory Care Administration
Lesson Two, Ambulatory Care Administration, will cover the administration of ambulatory care which includes technology and written communication, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, patient processing, daily healthcare office operations, types of health records, key information and ownership of health records, and a light introduction to the principles of pharmacology.
Lesson 3: Coding and Medical Billing Procedures
Lesson Three, Coding and Medical Billing Procedures, reviews the basics of diagnostics, coding and billing including the history of medical coding, guidelines, the basics of procedural coding, key steps in the medical billing process, and the introduction and organization of the CPT Manual (Current Procedural Terminology). Basics of health insurance will also be covered which includes the purpose, contracts with patients, and benefits.
Lesson 4: Medical Office Administrative Functions
Lesson Four, Medical Office Administrative Functions, details the administrative functions of patient accounts, collections, banking services and procedures, including practice management. Supervision, Human Resource Management, and Medical Practice Marketing will also be covered which includes running a successful medical office, marketing needs of a healthcare facility, and providing high quality customer service.
Lesson 5: Assisting with Medical Specialties
Lesson Five, Assisting with Medical Specialties, details safety in the healthcare facility including dealing with hazardous waste, emergency preparedness, assisting with medical emergencies, and general rules and procedures for dealing with said emergencies.
Lesson 6: Career Development
Lesson Six, Career Development, covers the basics of career management including developing career objectives, finding a job, developing a resume, creating a cover letter, completing online job profiles and applications, and interview tips and techniques.
Medical Terminology Career Prep Curriculum:
Lesson 1: Medical Terminology Basics
This lesson will help you be able to Identify the four-word elements used to build medical words. You will also learn how to divide medical words into their component parts and apply the basic rules to define and build medical words. You will learn how to interpret pronunciation marks so you can pronounce medical terms presented in this chapter.
Lesson 2: Body Structures
One of the most important parts of the course is understanding the organization of the body. While each person is unique in their own right, the way we are assembled as humans (in a general sense are nearly the same). For this lesson, upon understanding the different levels, planes, and regions of the body, participants will learn how to properly pronounce terms related to a body structure. Documenting health care activities will conclude this part of the course through the assigned activities provided.
Lesson 3: Integumentary, Digestive and Respiratory Systems
The third lesson of the course begins the comprehensive review of the major parts of the body. In this case, the first three (3) in focus are the integumentary, digestive, and respiratory systems. Better put, this lesson will provide comprehensive details and knowledge to understand medical terms specific to one's skin, digestive, and breathing systems. Anatomy and physiology reviews are included in the reading material so participants can not only comprehend terminology but also view where it is often located in these parts of the body. Additional supplemental materials located in the back of the text are available as additional study aids and reference for this and other core portions of the course.
Lesson 4: Cardiovascular, Blood, Lymphatic and Immune Systems
Continuing the discussion of core body systems, the fourth lesson reviews more specific systems which blood commonly flows through. This includes cardiovascular systems such as the heart, lymphatic systems, and more. Similar to other course lessons that focus on body systems, one will need to comprehend the aforementioned knowledge plus an understanding of various diseases or body issues that may result when malfunctions may occur. As mentioned in the previous lesson, additional supplemental materials located in the back of the text are available as additional study aids and reference for this and other core portions of the course.
Lesson 5: Musculoskeletal, Urinary, and Reproductive Systems
The fifth lesson of the course continues the focus of core body systems that medical professionals must understand in order to properly convey and use terms correctly. This lesson goes into great detail about musculoskeletal, urinary, and reproductive systems. These body systems are often dependent on others working properly and failure of those having issues or deficiencies will likely cause these to do the same or at worse fail. Participants should pay particular focus to the reproductive systems and their respective terms as they only apply to their gender and at times, it can be easy to confuse their respective terminologies. As part of a major reoccurring theme for the course, additional supplemental materials located in the back of the text are available as additional study aids and reference.
Lesson 6: Endocrine Systems
The second to last part of the course focuses on an ever-increasing medical base within the United States and the world - endocrinology. Endocrine systems provide the necessary functionality to help keep equilibrium within one's body and nutrients (e.g. glucose and insulin) to keep that balance in place. Hence, thyroid and diabetes care increasing in need, medical professionals must have a strong grasp of common terminology used in this space so that it can be communicated properly and effectively to patients and other medical personnel. To aid in the learning experiences in this important section of the course, additional supplemental materials located in the back of the text are recommended to be used in conjunction with required reading assignments.
Lesson 7: Nervous System and Special Senses
In the final lesson, participants will learn about one body system and special senses. You will be able to locate the major organs of each and describe their structure and function. You will also better understand how each relates to others in the body. You will also learn how to pronounce, spell, and build words related to all both. You will gain an understanding of diseases, conditions, and procedures related to each one as well. You will learn about pharmacology related to the treatment of disorders in each. One is encouraged to apply cumulative learning experiences to the comprehension of terms learned here as well as additional resources that immediately follow this chapter in the text.
